This assessment explores the multi-layered intellectual project of Dr. Neville Buch, a Brisbane-based independent scholar whose work constitutes a rigorous “humanistic ascent” against the technical and social fragmentation of the 21st century. By synthesizing Anglo-American analytic philosophy (notably Bernard Williams) with European continental traditions (Jürgen Habermas, Bernard Stiegler, and Bernard Lonergan), Buch has developed two primary diagnostic and procedural tools: Spiral Historiography and the Dynamic of Cognition (DoC). His work is characterized by a commitment to “crap detecting”—filtering out institutional propaganda and “potted thinking”—to restore human authorship over individual and collective narratives. Ultimately, Buch’s scholarship functions as a form of panser (thinking as caring), seeking to heal the wounds of “Historical Forgetfulness” and achieve a state of “philosophical compatibility” where faith, reason, and skepticism can coexist within a robust democratic framework.
