Abstract

The resurgence of Australian populism, exemplified by the cultural orbit of figures like Pauline Hanson and the One Nation party, is frequently satirized as a “black hole” that deforms the political landscape. Drawing on the background provided by Oslo Davis’s 2026 Saturday Briefing and the historiographical frameworks of Manning Clark and Donald Horne, this essay argues that Australian populism is not a foreign intrusion but rather the “drastic underside” of the nation’s egalitarian heritage. By utilizing Dr. Neville Buch’s Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) and Spiral Historiography, alongside the pharmacological insights of Bernard Stiegler and Jürgen Habermas, it is evident that when the virtue of mateship is stripped of its intellectual scaffolding, it regresses into a stolid anti-intellectualism and defensive xenophobia. This “immense regression” facilitates a state of “absolute non-knowledge” where the populist leader becomes the “master of the mass,” dragging public discourse down to the level of “artificial stupidity”.
