Abstract

This essay performs a Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) analysis on the recent Times Higher Education (THE) report regarding an experimental “set bias corrector” for student evaluations. While the tool aims to remediate systemic prejudices (age, gender, cultural distance), this analysis identifies the tool itself as a potential manifestation of the “techné mindset”—a cognitive pathology that substitutes quantifiable data for the “thick” social reality of human experience. By applying the DoC framework, we explore how this tool risks deepening the “denoetization” of the university—the liquidation of human judgment by automated systems—while simultaneously offering a “pharmakon” (both poison and cure) for existing bias. We argue that true “intellectual fit” in teaching cannot be achieved through algorithmic adjustment but requires a transition to Communicative Action and the restoration of human authorship over educational narratives.
