Review of Dr Macklin’s Yeronga History. Bridging the Gap in Brisbane’s Local Historiography

This review evaluates Dr. Michael Macklin’s History of Yeronga by positioning it within a scholarship spectrum defined by two extremes: the “ambitious amateur” descriptive style of the 1930s (represented by Inigo Jones) and the rigorous, interdisciplinary professional standards of the 2026 Australian Historical Association (AHA) conference. Utilizing the Management Institute for Contributory Economy (MICE) framework, the analysis examines how Macklin’s work employs the Local Study Area (LSA) framework to move beyond “folk history” toward “Sufficient Comprehension”. While Macklin excels in integrating Indigenous antiquity and countering terra nullius narratives, the review critically assesses the extent to which the narrative reaches the “Synoptic Vision” required to fully dismantle the “Queensland character” myth and achieve Aristotelian flourishing.
