Abstract

The intellectual history of Brisbane is a narrative of transition from a colonial outpost characterized by “historical forgetfulness” to a burgeoning centre for inclusive humanism and digital humanism. For too long, the city’s past was dismissed as an intellectual “desert,” a false narrative fuelled by technocratic governance and a neglect of the humanities. This essay traces Brisbane’s cognitive evolution across four historical eras: the Long Nineteenth Century (1801–1919), defined by the struggle between sectarian tradition and radical republicanism; the Early-Mid 20th Century (1920–1974), marked by the tension between industrial mechanization and vitalist philosophy; the Late Twentieth Century (1975–2000), which saw the rise of communicative action against systemic corruption; and the Early 21st Century (2001–Present), currently grappling with the “technical abyss” and the quest for human authorship. By applying the Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) and Bernard Stiegler’s pharmacological insights, this history demonstrates that “understanding history is philosophy in practice,” providing the necessary scaffolding for a “humanistic ascent” out of modern “symbolic misery”.
