How Spectrums go Wrong? Beyond Blunt Binaries in Social Analysis: Abstract
This essay critically evaluates the use of spectrums and typologies as analytical tools within the humanities and social sciences. It argues that not all spectrums possess equal explanatory power; rather, there exists a hierarchy ranging from “blunt” categorical oppositions to dynamic cognitive maps. Broad spectrums often rely on simplistic binaries, such as the dichotomy between religion and secularity, which lack empirical depth and ignore historical contingency. Furthermore, spectrums derived purely from statistical survey data are frequently unreliable because they capture unreflected “opinions and impressions” rather than the deeply embedded dispositions that drive actual behaviour. Drawing on Dr. Neville Buch’s Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) and the work of Jacques Ellul and Bernard Williams, the essay proposes that a “better” spectrum is one that facilitates a transition from unreflective “potted thinking” toward “Sufficient Comprehension” and human authorship.

However, within the framework of Dr. Neville Buch’s Spiral Historiography and the Dynamic of Cognition (DoC), these “negative” states function as vital diagnostic markers. This essay argues that even when grounded in “widely-believed falsehoods” or data errors, these spectrums reveal profound truths about the psychodynamics of society, institutional priorities, and the current state of denoetization—the mechanical liquidation of judgment. By examining how “historical forgetfulness” reveals technocratic values and how “stigma” unmasks social boundaries, the analysis demonstrates that a “Pedagogy of Choice” and the “craftsmanship of the reflexive insider” can transform these cognitive errors into pathways for reclaiming Human Authorship over our spiritual and intellectual narratives.
