Dear Emeritus Professor Megill,

We previously discussed our thinking via Academia.Edu. I wanted to update you on my work progress and how it relates to yours. Australian intellectual history is lost, except for the work of independent researchers.

I have often tried to convince the Vice-Chancellor, the Premier of Queensland and the Education Minister that the University and society are in bad shape because of the loss of many fields of learning.

Abstract
This guide explains Dr. Neville Buch’s ideas about how we look at the past to make our future better. His main idea is that history isn’t just a list of dates to memorize; it is a way of practicing how to think clearly about our lives today. Sometimes, people act like robots, only caring about data and quick results—this is called the “techné mindset”. Dr. Buch suggests a different path called Spiral Historiography, where we circle back to old ideas to learn from past mistakes so we don’t repeat them. By following four special pathways, we can move from just following orders to being the true authors of our own lives.

Abstract
This essay provides a comparative analysis of Allan Megill’s foundational epistemology and Dr. Neville Buch’s historiographical methodology. Megill’s work, centred on the professional standards of historical practice, offers a rigorous defence of “honest objectivity” through a fourfold matrix of historical tasks: description, explanation, argument, and interpretation. In contrast, Buch’s methodology, grounded in the axiom that “understanding history is philosophy in practice,” operates as an active intervention into the “Dynamic of Cognition” (DoC) to remediate the societal pathologies of the “techné mindset” and “Historical Forgetfulness”. While Megill provides the epistemological “ballast” for professional standards, Buch utilizes Spiral Historiography as a “sonar” to navigate the submerged currents of human thought, transforming the craft of history into a procedure for Aristotelian flourishing and social accountability.
