Neville —
We are in a new political paradigm – and our work is cut out for us.
A progressive super-majority will define Australia’s 48th Parliament, while the Liberal Party’s power has been devastated by voters.
As the final votes are still being counted, there is no doubt we face a time of historic opportunity. Opportunity to fix the housing crisis, reduce the gap between rich and poor, and to finally rein in the fossil fuel industry that’s wrecking our climate and driving up the cost of living.
The key question is: will the Albanese Government seize this nation shaping opportunity? Or will it continue cautiously – at best, wasting precious time or, at worst, letting a new, more dangerous, right-wing politics emerge?
For years, we at the Australia Institute have worked to make politically impossible ideas inevitable. Our nation-shaping research helped establish a national anti-corruption commission, helped make the Stage 3 tax cuts better and fairer, and successfully busted the lie that Australia has a gas shortage, when what we really have is a gas export problem.
Now, our role is clear: help courage beat fear.
For years, with the support of people like you, the Australia Institute’s research has countered the misinformation and vested interests pushed on our politics by far-right lobby groups, billionaires, and the Murdoch Press telling us what can’t be done.
Courage is the best antidote to fear, and the fear-mongering of the Murdoch press, Advance Australia, Coal Australia and other extreme right lobby groups has been soundly rejected by Australian voters.
Through a steady drumbeat of independent research, explainers, public pressure, alliance building and clear-eyed analysis of the most pressing challenges, we not only help spread good ideas, together we have shown that the influence of Australia’s extreme right forces on our politics can be beaten. That big ideas and progressive research that matters have the power to capture a nation, despite fierce opposition.
As a nation, we simply cannot afford to waste this golden opportunity by tinkering around the edges of problems. This is our once-in-a-generation opportunity for a progressive government with an unprecedented super-majority to enact the bold, brave, and necessary change Australia needs.
Democracy thrives on high expectations and together, we can help the next Parliament be courageous and ambitious for Australia.
I am excited to get started on this work with you, Neville.
Sincerely,
Richard Denniss
