Abstract
Nick Cater’s critique of Australian migration represents a profound “category error” that substitutes a narrow “techné mindset” for a comprehensive understanding of human flourishing. By framing the presence of migrants as a threat to the “social fabric,” Cater relies on “passive nihilism” and the repetition of reactionary propaganda, which disconnects thought from the “thick” reality of lived historical experience. His argument falls outside the limits of philosophy because it fails the test of “truth and truthfulness,” ignoring the historical contingency of national identity in favour of a “fortress mindset” that treats persons as mere economic units rather than authors of their own existence.
