Abstract

In 2026, Griffith University occupies a unique position within the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings, navigating a structural tension between its foundational radicalism and contemporary neoliberal metrics. Founded in 1971 with a pioneering mandate for environmental science and interdisciplinary inquiry, Griffith represents a critical node for “thinking education in place”. This essay evaluates Griffith’s position not merely as a set of ranking statistics but through a Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) framework, contrasting the “banking system” of knowledge—which treats sustainability as a commodity—with a “problem-posing” model rooted in Planetary Wisdom. By synthesizing the “craftsmanship of the reflexive insider” with strategic academic planning, the study argues that Griffith’s leadership in sustainability is sustained by its historical commitment to interdisciplinary schools, even as it resists the “historical forgetfulness” imposed by “job-ready” technocratic policies.
