Calvin Coolidge was the American President (1923-1929), and although Donald Trump (2017-2020; 2025-) models himself and his expansionist policies on William McKinley (1897-1901), Trump’s economic policies is aligned to Coolidge’s small government and “leave the market to itself” policies (added with highly controversial 1890 McKinley Tariff).
Coolidge’s critics argue that he failed to use the country’s economic boom to help struggling farmers and workers in other flailing industries, and there is still much debate among historians about the extent to which Coolidge’s economic policies contributed to the onset of the Great Depression, which began shortly after he left office. However, it must dawn on Trumpers, eventually, that their rural agricultural and urban industrial interests are undermined in the Coolidge-Trump agenda.
