Abstract
This essay examines the pivotal roles of pleasurable-comfortableness and discomforting pain as sensory and psychological gateways within the philosophical frameworks of Bernard Williams, Bernard Stiegler, Susan Haack, and Nel Noddings. Drawing on the Management Institute for Contributory Economy (MICE) framework, the analysis identifies “pleasurable comfort” as the primary characteristic of the “Conventional Person” or “Tourist in Reality,” whose retreat into private ease facilitates a state of “Historical Forgetfulness”. Conversely, “discomforting pain” is presented not merely as biological data but as the “social wound” that necessitates a shift from mere calculation (penser) to “thinking as caring” (panser). By synthesizing Williams’s “thick concepts,” Stiegler’s critique of denoetization, Haack’s passionate moderation, and Noddings’s relational ethics, the essay argues that the acknowledgment of human suffering acts as the mandatory empirical grounding for restoring human authorship over automated systems.
The Physical Gateway: Pleasure and Pain in the Intellectual Community
1. The Trap of Pleasurable-Comfortableness: The “Tourist” Mindset
Within the MICE framework, pleasurable-comfortableness is diagnosed as a cognitive impediment that anchors the “closed loop” of the conventional mind. The “Conventional Person” navigates existence with the detached attitude of a “tourist in reality,” shielded by material comforts from the rigorous demands of philosophical inquiry and self-examination. This state of unreflective automaticity allows the individual to retreat from complex moral demands into private achievements, effectively denying their own “real interests” and facilitating “Historical Forgetfulness”. By prioritizing the “appearance of virtue” and the “geometrical tidiness” of formal rules over substantial engagement, this mindset leads to “symbolic misery” and the “mechanical liquidation of discernment”.
2. Discomforting Pain as the Catalyst for Critique
In contrast to the stagnant ease of the tourist, discomforting pain serves as the tangible gateway to genuine critique. Drawing on the legacy of Jack McKinney, pain is understood as a subjective phenomenon that exists in individual consciousness through language, suggesting a “completely different approach to the treatment of human suffering”. Bernard Stiegler identifies the modern era as one of “Academic Immense Regression” and “denoetization,” where the pressure of automated systems inflicts “social wounds” that cannot be healed by technical calculation. To remediate these wounds, MICE advocates for “Methodological Tenderness” and the reinvention of thinking as caring (panser), ensuring that the “who” (the human being) remains the master of the “what” (the technical system).
3. Williams and Noddings: Thick Concepts and Relational Ethics
Bernard Williams provides the “historical a priori” for this sensory turn by emphasizing “thick ethical concepts” such as kindness and cruelty. These concepts uniquely unite factual description with evaluative meaning, providing the “rough ground” necessary to prevent judgment from being “shut up in subjectivity”. Nel Noddings extends this into relational ethics, distinguishing between “natural caring” (acting because “I want”) and “ethical caring” (acting because “I must” care, even in spite of a desire to escape another person’s pain). For Noddings, the “must” of ethical caring is a response to the discomfort of witnessing another’s suffering, grounding intelligence in contributions to social life rather than abstract intellectual exercises.
4. Susan Haack: The Passionate Moderate and the Honour of the Mind
Susan Haack contributes a rigorous epistemic discipline to this gateway, defending scientific inquiry as a point of “honour” for those who delight in exercising the mind. Her “Foundherentism” seeks an intermediate path between infinite regress and dogmatic circularity, recognizing that experience is relevant for the justification of empirical beliefs. As a “passionate moderate,” Haack rejects the “politics of uncaring” (cynicism) and “vulgar” interpretations that abandon the quest for truth, asserting that “doing one’s damnedest with the mind” is the only defence against systemic indifference.
Conclusion: From Passive Comfort to Human Authorship
The transition from a “Junior” state of unreflective execution to a “Senior” state of social accountability requires a sensory reorientation. One must move beyond the “search for certitude” found in the pleasurable-comfortableness of automated routines and embrace the “fearsome responsibility” of choosing one’s own values. By utilizing history as “philosophy in practice,” the Contributory Agent uses the pain of the community as a diagnostic signal to “uncoil” patterns of error and restore human authorship. Ultimately, the goal is Aristotelian flourishing (eudaimonia), where success is measured by the ability to tend to social fragmentation with empathy and wisdom.
Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) Table: The Sensory Gateway to Critique
| DoC Component | Regression (Pleasurable Comfort) | Corrective (Discomforting Pain) | Philosophical Rationale |
| Prejudice (Centre) | Tourist Attitude: Shielding oneself with private comforts from moral demands. | Reflective Self-Criticism: Confronting “social wounds” and historical contingency. | Shifting from “unconscious ignorance” to proactive, logic-based choices. |
| Attitudes (Thinking) | “Techné” Mindset: Reducing complex suffering to quantifiable data. | Communicative Action: Dialogue oriented toward understanding shared pain. | Replaces strategic manipulation with intersubjective mutuality. |
| Exclusion (Sensation) | Historical Forgetfulness: Banishing the context of “actual wounds” from memory. | Spiral Historiography: “Uncoiling” repetitive errors and “crap detecting” myths. | Reveals manufactured “natural facts” as contingent historical constructions. |
| Inclusion (Intuition) | Symbolic Misery: Reducing the person to a passive conduit for automated stimuli. | Human Authorship: Restoring the person as the proactive author of their narrative. | Restores the “who” (human being) as the master of the “what” (technical systems). |
