Abstract

This essay investigates the conceptual intersection between the social philosophy of Dr. Jean-Philippe (JP) Deranty and the historiographical framework of Dr. Neville Buch. Drawing primarily on Deranty’s 2021/2022 volume, Whither Work?, and Buch’s systemic analysis in The Architecture of Error, the analysis identifies a shared foundation in Frankfurt School critical theory, particularly the communicative action of Jürgen Habermas and the pragmatic idealism of John Dewey. Both scholars diagnose a modern crisis of “denoetization”—the liquidation of human judgment by technical or managerial systems—and advocate for a return to Aristotelian flourishing. While Deranty focuses on the democratization of the workplace and the “productive dimension” of work collectives, Buch emphasizes the “uncoiling” of historical error through Spiral Historiography. Ultimately, their connection lies in a mutual commitment to reclaiming human authorship over narratives and institutions that have been compressed by a narrow “techné mindset.”

Dr Buch was the PHA (Qld) e-Bulletin, the monthly state association’s electronic publication, and was a member of its Management Committee.
