Silence as a weapon against legitimate critics

“Flooding the zone” is a well-known strategy of the Trump administration, first put forward by strategist Steve Bannon, for blitzing the news agenda with a constant stream of new policies and controversies. Not only has this helped prevent any scandal from bringing down the president, it also makes teaching about the current moment particularly daunting. But a number of universities around the world are launching new modules trying to do just that. These include environmental journalism under Trump at the University of Pennsylvania, “Trump vs. Science” at Hampshire College or the “People’s Guide to Trumpism” at the University of San Francisco. Academics with experience of this challenge told Times Higher Education that teaching about such a fast-moving political climate is not easy and their courses need constant updating. Those based in the US also risk provoking the White House. One professor who previously taught a course mentioning Trump that attracted significant attention said it was an “unpleasant experience” to come under such scrutiny. Though they urged academics to continue to teach about Trump, the academic urged others to “tread carefully on how public you make it”.

What strikes me about the Times Higher Education synopsis (12 November 2025) is that Donald Trump’s American administration was put into power on the basis of the message of “free expression”  among his supporters, where free expression meant policy views more to the right, beyond the common consensus, and the common sense consensus being a judgement that considers the whole spectrum and lands on a centralism, something that is accuracy in the centralism (centralists can make mistakes). Thus Trumpism is extreme in judgement and is not accurate.

That should be obvious to everyone outside the cult of Trump, however, the extreme of Trumpism has been attempted to be legitimatize by the public relations machine, such in the way of Propaganda in the 1930s. Among the sociologically and historical uneducated, the effort is succeeding. Why? because to understand the lie in propaganda one needs a sophisticated and well-developed education on the topic-at-hand; otherwise, the legitimization is not what is truly needed. What is truly needed for legitimization are descriptions and explanations born of critical thinking (a “formal” genre of informal logic).

The public, in the vast majority, will not know the critical thinking for the assigned topic if the education system is reduced of teachers and researchers, who are the leading experts of the fields which speak the most intelligently to these topics. Now, going back to THE article. The warning of the article was to “attracted significant attention said it was an “unpleasant experience” to come under such scrutiny.” However, scrutiny is what is needed. Now, the THE article picked out a few “strawman” examples: “Trump vs. Science”, “People’s Guide to Trumpism”. The scrutiny needs to be deep, not Trumpism, but on the Trumpocene.

This is what I offer for employment and contracting. Course programs on “contemporary global history and the relations with localism” and “the sociology of Trumpocene”. These were the type of course programs which were once taught at Australian universities. But, in their “infinite wisdom” politicians and vice-chancellors decided to scrape these types of course offerings from the curricula.

Hence, the way to silence the legitimate critics in the method of the hidden curriculum: look it up (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_curriculum).
