Abstract: Jack McKinney provided the best version of Australian Humanism. The intellectual history of Australian humanism is complex, drawing from various movements and evolving over time. Understanding this history requires recognizing the interplay between secularism, rationalism, freethought, with, surprisingly, Christian and empathetic Post-Christian Thought, and the specific development of humanist organizations in Australia. Jack Philip McKinney (1891-1966) once a general household name among avid readers in the country. He was also among the educated in Australian history and literature as the partner and husband of Judith Arundell Wright McKinney, otherwise known as Judith Wright,  Australian’s most famous poet and environmentalist. Informatively, Jack was a well-known writer for The Bulletin and other leading magazine in the first part of the century. In the second half of the century, he became a professional philosopher with a strong interest in the mid-century anthropological philosophy, which was emerging from the 1940s and 1950s.
