Identity Politics and the Ascent toward Comprehensive Empathy

(Anthropologic Pedagogy)

This essay explores the proposition that “Identity Politics is Personal,” an argument developed by Dave Andrews which posits that while identity politics is an inescapable feature of the modern landscape, it can be transcended through a “reflective ascent” toward comprehensive empathy. This perspective is rooted in “The Life of Jesus Tradition,” a lineage of thought spanning from the New Testament and St. Paul to the critical historiography of David Strauss (translated by George Eliot) and the philosophy of Hegel. This tradition emphasizes the individual conscience and the historical person over rigid dogmatic systems. By integrating 20th-century progressive pedagogy with 21st-century Anthropological Pedagogy—represented by figures such as Dave Andrews, Michael Macklin, Neil Peach, and Neville Buch—the essay demonstrates how the Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) provides a framework for moving beyond tribal markers to a state of “panser” (thinking as caring) and universal human flourishing. The essay has a significant questions and answers section which ties of the attached essay; everything together as the Dynamic of Cognition and Spiral Historiography.
