In and Out of Unity and Universality…
Abstract
This essay explores the cognitive and historical movement of human thought as it oscillates between the pursuit of foundational unity and the recognition of historical contingency. By utilizing the Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) framework, the analysis maps six pivotal intellectual shifts in Western history, tracing the evolution from the providential totalities of the medieval mind to the instrumental rationalisation of modernity, and finally to the applied philosophy of the contemporary era. The central thesis posits that persons “slip” into limited thinking when they prioritize abstract universalism or a “techné mindset,” and “climb” toward comprehensive knowledge through spiral historiography and an intentional commitment to self-understanding. Ultimately, the essay argues that “understanding history is philosophy in practice,” providing the necessary empirical grounding to navigate the multi-textured complexity of lived human experience.
