Introduction
This paper considered the spiral historiography across:
- Augustine’ City of God;
- Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae;
- Hegel’s Lectures on the Philosophy of World History;
- Marx’s The German Ideology;
- H. Green’s Lectures on the Principles of Political Obligation;
- S. Mill’s The Spirit of the Age;
- Max Weber’s General Economic History;
- H. Tawney’s Religion and the Rise of Capitalism.
The paper then considers the Contemporary Belief Systems of ‘The West’ in the last hundred years, where the traditional outlook Augustine-Aquinas has been transformed in the evangelical historiography of David W. Bebbington (UK) and Stuart Piggin (Australia). This outlook or worldview is out of touch with the thinking from Augustine-Aquinas via Max Weber and R.H. Tawney to Neville Buch (the author of this paper, from Australia).
