A Short Note for Hope from What I have Published

In the midst of unawareness and depression, a condition often characterized as a state of “absolute non-knowledge” or “symbolic misery,” a person should actively engage in a “reflective ascent” to reclaim human authorship over their own narrative. This process begins by recognizing that depression is frequently a symptom of a “general incapacity” where one’s real interests and a better future are temporarily invisible to the present self. To counter this, one should adopt the practice of panser—reinventing thinking (penser) as caring (panser)—which is the procedural necessity of tending to intellectual and social wounds with empathy rather than cold calculation.

Active thinking should follow these specific methodological steps:

  • Initiate Reflective Self-Criticism: One must move past “ignorant habit” and simplistic literalism by using the “Socratic sting” of contradiction to make the familiar seem “strange,” thereby forcing the mind out of “double ignorance” (not knowing that one does not know).
  • Identify the “Epimethean Fault”: A person should actively think about the historical contingency of their current suffering, recognizing that “Historical Forgetfulness”—the banishing of social and historical context—leaves the individual “stuck in time-space” and vulnerable to manufactured myths.
  • Practice “Crap Detecting”: This involves the systematic filtering out of “institutional bullshit,” sociological propaganda, and pollutants of speech that reinforce a discontinuous personality steered by external stimuli.
  • Engage in Communicative Action: Rather than withdrawing into isolation, one should seek intersubjective mutuality through dialogue aimed at mutual understanding, which restores the capacity for rational-critical communication.
  • Affirm “Natality” and New Beginnings: Drawing on the concept of natality, a person should think of the faculty of action as a “miracle” that allows for a new beginning, regardless of the “dead weight of the past”.
  • Move Through the Levels of Consciousness: Actively shift thought from mere empirical sensation (how one feels) to intellectual inquiry (why one feels this way), then to rational judgment (is this feeling a true reflection of reality?), and finally to responsible decision-making (what is to be done?).
  • Adopt “Active Nihilism” as Self-Overcoming: Use passion as the energy to drive a continuous confrontation with despair, transforming it into an imperative for conscious creation and the elimination of wilful ignorance.

Ultimately, the goal is to achieve “practical confidence,” which is a social and psychological state of strength that persists even in the face of moral luck and a world that may seem absurd or incoherent. By “uncoiling” the circle of repetitive cognitive errors through Spiral Historiography, the individual can re-author their existence as a relational composition rather than a binary opposition of ‘Us’ versus ‘Them’.

KEY SUMMARY

“The Reflective Ascent: Reclaiming Human Authorship over Despair” argues that individuals trapped in the “symbolic misery” of unawareness and depression—a state of “absolute non-knowledge”—must reclaim their status as the proactive creators of their own lives through a rigorous “reflective ascent”. This process is centred on the practice of panser, which reinvents thinking (penser) as caring (panser) to tend to intellectual and social wounds with empathy rather than cold instrumental calculation. The methodology requires the subject to move beyond “ignorant habit” by initiating reflective self-criticism, identifying the “Epimethean fault” of Historical Forgetfulness, and employing “crap detecting” to filter out the “institutional bullshit” and propaganda that steer the personality toward external stimuli. By engaging in communicative action and affirming the faculty of natality (new beginnings), the individual utilizes Spiral Historiography to “uncoil” repetitive cognitive errors. Ultimately, this ascent leads to a state of “practical confidence” and wisdom, allowing the person to re-author their existence as a relational composition that transcends the “Analytical Abyss” of mortality and fate.
