Abstract

The new Mapping Brisbane History (MBH) Program is a digital historiographical initiative founded on the axiom that ”Understanding history is philosophy in practice”. Directed by Dr. Neville Buch, the program utilizes a Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) methodology to move beyond parochial “folk history” and unreflective administrative data. By clustering historical data into 67 distinct Local Study Areas (LSAs) across four epochs, MBH employs Digital Humanism to recreate lost historical landscapes through 20-year interval snapshots. This process is designed to ”uncoil” repetitive patterns of “Historical Forgetfulness” and dismantle manufactured myths like the “Queensland character”. Ultimately, the program seeks to restore Human Authorship, transitioning the individual from a passive node in a technical network to a proactive author of their shared social reality.
