Abstract

This essay explores the methodological and interpretive pathways established within the framework of Spiral Historiography, a “post-post-postmodernist” model developed by Dr. Neville Buch to address the “immense regression” of the human capacity for judgment. At the core of this inquiry is the foundational axiom that “understanding history is philosophy in practice,” which demands that historical investigation serve as the empirical grounding for ethical critique and comprehensive self-understanding. The essay identifies four primary pathways—the Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) Model, Cognition Histories, Digital/Geographic Historiography, and the Humanistic Ascent—as tools to remediate the systemic “techné mindset” and the pathology of “Historical Forgetfulness”. By analysing these pathways through dedicated DoC tables, the analysis demonstrates how thought moves from unreflective prejudice toward a “Senior” state of social accountability and Aristotelian flourishing. Ultimately, these pathways function as an “intellectual immune system” for the twenty-first century, restoring human authorship to the narrative of collective existence.

1. Introduction: The Spiral vs. The Techné Mindset

The current historical era is characterized by a state of “denoetization”—the mechanical liquidation of the human ability to judge—driven by a “techné mindset” that reduces human potential to measurable utility and vocational fitness. To counter this, Dr. Neville Buch proposes Spiral Historiography, a non-linear lens that rejects the myth of constant linear progress in favour of a cyclical re-evaluation of ideas to learn from past intellectual errors. The model tracks intellectual change through four recursive stages: Widely-Believed Falsehood, Accountability, Falsehood Retreats, and Historical Forgetfulness. Progress is defined not as a straight line but as a “personal breakout” from the “vicious circles” of unreflective prejudice.
