The audio commentary on the work of Dr. Neville Buch and other sociologists and philosophers.
Dr Neville Buch[1]
Abstract
This essay explores the intersecting challenges of human agency, cognitive autonomy, and institutional control in the era of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Centred on the critical sociological synthesis of Roe and Perkins (2026), it examines the “hard question” of GenAI: how the delegation of intellectual labour to algorithmic models risks eroding cognitive capacity and entrenching structural inequalities. This problem is then contextualized within the philosophical and sociological framework of Dr. Neville Buch, who diagnoses these issues as symptoms of an “immense regression” marked by “denoetization” and a pervasive “techné mindset.” To counter this systemic crisis, the essay outlines a series of structural, cognitive, and pedagogical correctives. These basic solutions—including the POLICE model, Spiral Historiography, “Thinking as Caring” (panser), and the transition to a Contributory Economy—provide a comprehensive blueprint for reclaiming human authorship, achieving “Senior” cognition, and securing Aristotelian flourishing (eudaimonia) in a technologically mediated world.
