Hannah Arendt (1906-1975)

Abstract

The intersection of the philosophies of Hannah Arendt and Dr. Neville Buch provides a powerful intellectual defence of human authorship and plurality in an era increasingly defined by the “technical abyss” and the erosion of truth. Arendt’s “how” of philosophy—rooted in passionate thinking, the vita activa, and a non-determinative theory of judgment—serves as a primary catalyst for Buch’s Dynamic of Cognition and his POLICE model. This essay explores how Arendtian concepts such as natality (the miracle of beginning) and the rejection of systemic lying converge with Buch’s Spiral Historiography and his vision for a Contributory Economy. By integrating these perspectives, the essay argues that the recovery of the reflective self from the “immense regression” of the 21st century is achieved not through abstract axioms, but through a committed practice of truthfulness and intersubjective mutuality.

Nel Noddings (1929-2022)

Abstract

The intersection of the philosophies of Nel Noddings and Dr. Neville Buch provides a transformative framework for reclaiming the human spirit from the “technical abyss” and “immense regression” of the 21st century. Nel Noddings’ “how” of philosophy is centred on an ethics of care and relational ethics, which prioritizes meaningful human connections over the cold calculations of utility and efficiency. Dr. Buch integrates Noddings’ insights into his Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) and the POLICE model, proposing that thinking (penser) must be reinvented as caring (panser)—the procedural necessity of tending to the wounds of a fragmented society. Together, they reject the mechanistic paradigm that views humans as machines, instead advocating for human authorship and inclusive humanism. This essay demonstrates how their combined approach fosters “sufficient comprehension” and holistic flourishing, offering a critical cognitive immunity system against the “banality of evil” and the dehumanizing forces of modern technocracy.

Susan Haack (1945- )

Abstract

The intersection of the philosophies of Susan Haack and Dr. Neville Buch constitutes a robust defence of human authorship and rational inquiry against the twin threats of scientism (the reduction of all truth to the natural sciences) and cynicism (the postmodern denial of objective truth). Susan Haack provides the epistemological core through foundherentism—a theory that avoids the pitfalls of both infinite regress and circularity by using the metaphor of the crossword puzzle—and Innocent Realism, which adapts Duns Scotus’s insight that the real is what it is regardless of what anyone believes. Dr. Buch extends this into the social and historical realms through Spiral Historiography and the Dynamic of Cognition (DoC), arguing that “understanding history is philosophy in practice”. Together, they advocate for an “ideological compatibilism” that seeks a synoptic vision—harmonizing the sciences and the humanities to achieve “sufficient comprehension” of the human condition. This essay explores their shared commitment to truthfulness, their critique of “institutional bullshit,” and the methodological steps required for the lifelong learner to navigate the “technical abyss” of the 21st century.

Three “Women” Philosophers

Abstract

“Women” philosophers are not as visible in the public marketplace. Even the term “Women” can come across as a putdown. This essay is not a gender study. It is a recognition of three philosophers, who happen to be “women”, who have been very important to the work of Dr Buch (who happens to be male). In these cases, it is not their gender which is paramount to the philosophy, with the expectation that “feminism” is gender-neutral, a characteristic of being human, a variation across gender.

The intersection of Hannah Arendt, Nel Noddings, and Susan Haack forms a robust intellectual “immunity system” against the “immense regression” of the 21st century. Arendt provides the existential foundation through the concepts of natality and action. Noddings centres the human experience on an ethics of care, transforming thinking into a relational act of tending to wounds ( panser ). Haack offers a rigorous epistemological middle path through foundherentism, defending the Science Paradigm against both scientism and cynical relativism. Together, their work supports Dr. Buch’s vision of Inclusive Humanism, which seeks sufficient comprehension and the restoration of human authorship in an era of technological disruption and Historical Forgetfulness.
