Abstract:

The True Intellectual System of the Universe (1678) represents the definitive seventeenth-century defence of a self-conscious, universal Mind against the rising tide of mechanical and hylozoic atheism. By investigating the foundational principles of both ancient and modern thought, Ralph Cudworth seeks to prove that “Intelligence itself” is the primary reality from which all finite minds and material forms are derived. This summary explores his critique of materialistic reductionism and his advocacy for a “Plastic Life of Nature” that harmonizes divine providence with natural laws.

This essay explores the cognitive and institutional disconnect between the seventeenth-century philosophical defence of “True Intelligence” by Ralph Cudworth and the contemporary marginalization of intellectual historians, such as Dr. Neville Buch, within the outer circle of the modern universities. Cudworth’s magnum opus, The True Intellectual System of the Universe, argues that intelligence is not a passive byproduct of material sensation but an active, archetypal power that is “senior” to the physical world. In contrast, today’s academic institutions are increasingly dominated by a “techné” mindset—a form of technocratic reductionism that prioritizes quantifiable data, immediate utility, and “retail governance” over deep theoretical inquiry. By applying the Dynamic of Cognition (DoC) framework, this essay demonstrates that intellectual historians are ignored not due to a lack of rigor, but because their work—as “philosophy in practice”—unmasks the “Historical Forgetfulness” and ideological constraints upon which the modern “credential society” depends for its survival.
